Why Sitting is the New Smoking

Yes, you’ve all been hearing the slogan, “Sitting is the new Smoking”, drawing our attention to one more thing we are nudged to implement in our Self Care protocol.

My focus is more on optimal BRAIN and ENERGY function, than lung function; but either way here’s some facts to support why you will want to “Move it.”

When we sit for long periods of time, we unintentionally shift ourselves into ‘conservation mode’ energy wise.  We don’t fix this with a simple ‘mind over matter’, especially if our energy cup is half full to begin with.

Gently moving the body helps facilitate optimal circulation of the glucose and oxygen required for energy production.  (ever hear the term: feeling brain dead or foggy headed)

When I did my paper on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, it was very clear that when an individual has expended all their energy; it varies greatly how they recover.  While one person (who is well) can refill that cup of energy in a matter of hours, minutes or overnight.  The one suffering from OVERLOAD, Burn Out or is a Stress-aholic may need a WEEK to refill their energy cup.  So we need to ease into this slowly so the body is not going into protection mode………and thwarting all our attempts to get in balance.

A few simple things we can look at:

  • Standing will double our metabolism (over sitting)
  • Walking will give 5 times the boost
  • Get even more ROI (return on your investment) of energy by doing those movements in Nature and even more if you combine that with Music (that you enjoy).

Some easy applications:

  • When you answer the phone, STAND, don’t sit.  It will help you stay focused on the conversation and help you avoid trying to do 3 things at once, like: email, computer screen, TV during the phone conversation.
  • If you can’t get out into nature, make sure to have some lovely nature photos or prints in your home or office to help you feel the same vibes.
  • Get a selection of some of your favourite songs and place them on your iPod or listening device so you can have a quick pick-me-up, listening at intervals throughout your day.  Even better, when you’re listening, stretch or move.

There’s a few nuggets to help you get that “Energy Cycle” re-established and on the incline.
